TECH UPDATES 12/09/2020

 1. Rocket Lab has launched a spacecraft in Earth's orbit, the first of its Photon satellite line. The satellite called 'First Light' was deployed to orbit on Rocket Lab's 14th Electron mission and is designed to carry customer payloads to a variety of destinations, including the Moon and Venus. After lift-off, Electron deployed a 100 kg microsatellite for Capella Space.

2. American defence contractor Northrop Grumman named its NG-14 Cygnus spacecraft 'S.S. Kalpana Chawla' after the late astronaut. "It's (our) tradition to name each Cygnus after an individual who has played pivotal role in human spaceflight. Chawla was selected in honour of her prominent place in history as the first woman of Indian descent to go to space," Northrop Grumman said.

3. The controversial push to force Chinese tech unicorn ByteDance to divest part or all of its smash-hit TikTok  social media service to a U.S.-based company could be in doubt after a report today indicated that China’s government may oppose the transaction. According to reporting by Reuters, the Chinese government may prefer TikTok to simply shutter its U.S. operations instead of allowing it to be sold to an American company.

4.Ahead of the U.S. presidential election, Google  says it has taken a number of steps to improve the quality of information that it highlights across its various search and news products. The company says that it will now remove any Autocomplete predictions that seem to endorse or oppose a candidate or a political party, or that make a claim about voting or the electoral process. That would mean eliminating predictions like “you can vote by phone,” “you can’t vote by phone” or anything suggesting that you donate to a party or candidate.

5. A bug in United Airlines’  website let anyone access the ticket information for travelers who requested a refund. The airline’s website lets users check their refund status by entering their ticket number and last name. But the website wasn’t validating the last name, making it possible to access other travelers’ refund information by changing the ticket number.

What is the role of Engine Oil in Vehicles?

Engine oils play a crucial part in your engine’s functionality. Without the oil, your engine can become damaged fairly quickly and so it’s in your best interest to make sure that the engine oil is up to par. The oil in your engine makes sure that the all mechanical components are lubricated to reduce friction, wear and heat. The engine oil ensures that components don’t rub against each other and wear away. While it depends on how often you use your car, older engine oil doesn’t perform as well and so a regular change in engine oil is essential to the functionality of your car.

Why is there a groove line on the "F" and "J" keys on keyboards?

The bumps or nipples found on the F and J keys on the keyboard helps users correctly position their left and right hand on the keyboard without having to look at the keyboard. For example, without looking at your keyboard you should be able to feel the keyboard and correctly position your left index finger on the F and the right index finger on the J. From this position, you should be able to locate the remainder of the keys on the keyboard. A phone having a hardware numeric keypad has something similar. The digit 5 also has a bump. It is also used for the same purpose. One can easily and quickly enter the digits without having a look at the keypad.

What is TrichoScan?

Quantitative methods for the analysis of human hair growth and hair loss are necessary for patient follow-ups or to determine the efficacy of hair growth promoting drugs.  While reviewing the capabilities of the different methods, the common theme emerges that most techniques are of little practical use to the clinician because they are time consuming, costly, or difficult to perform. An operator- and patient-friendly, inexpensive, validated, and reliable method for assessing hair growth was therefore a rational need.  With TrichoScan, such a tool is now available. TrichoScan is a software-based method for the analysis of human hair. For this purpose, digital images are taken from the scalp with a specially developed camera-optics system. TrichoScan software is then used to automatically calculate important parameters of hair growth, such as hair density or thickness from the images.

Contact Lenses Made of 👁️

There are three main categories of contact lenses, based on the materials they are made of: soft contacts, rigid gas permeable (GP) contacts, and hybrid contact lenses. Soft contacts are made of pliable hydrophilic ("water-loving") plastics called hydrogels. Hydrogels absorb significant amounts of water to keep the lenses soft and supple. Because of this water-loving characteristic, the water content of various hydrogel contact lenses can range from approximately 38 to 75 percent (by weight). The water content of soft lenses allows oxygen to pass through the lenses and keep the cornea healthy during contact lens wear. Gas permeable contacts, also called GP or RGP lenses, are rigid (hard) contact lenses. Like hydrogels used for soft lenses, materials used to create GP contact lenses also are "gas permeable," allowing oxygen to pass through the lenses to the cornea. Unlike soft lenses, however, rigid gas permeable lenses do not contain significant amounts of water. In

Why do Oil rigs have a Flame?

The flame at the top of an oil rig is an iconic image for the Oil & Gas Industry, yet few people understand why companies choose to burn natural gas. By burning excess natural gas, flaring protects against the dangers of over-pressuring industrial equipment. A gas flare, alternatively known as a flare stack, flare boom, ground flare, or flare pit is a gas combustion device used in industrial plants such as petroleum refineries, chemical plants and natural gas processing plants. Flaring is undertaken as a way to remove dangerous gasses with lower harm to the environment. It is used in safely regulating pressure in chemical plants, as well as handling natural gas release in wells. Alternatives, such as piping the gas to a plant or on-site capture and use, are of great interest.
